Getting to Malta

Malta is located in the Mediterranean just south of Italy. From Australia, cheap flights to Malta are provided by two airlines. Stopovers in the Middle East usually allow for convenient one stop connecting service from Sydney or Melbourne. Flying time to Malta is approximately 20 hours.

Airlines from Australia

There are two airlines serving both Australia and Malta. Emirates Airlines provides one stop connections from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth through Dubai. British Airways flies from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth and starts flights to Malta through London Gatwick in early 2014. British Airways flights make a stop in Singapore en route to London.

Malta International Airport (MLA)

Malta’s airport is located 5 kilometers outside the capital city of Valletta. Air Malta is based at MLA and connections can be made throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The airport features a wide array of shops and restaurants while ATM and currency exchange services are located in the arrivals area. Taxi service into the city is frequent and car rentals are readily available.

This ancient island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea is a majestic mix of culture and history, with a dash of modern European flair. Its ancient footprint is felt across the islands from stone temples thousands of years old to historic fortress walls erected to protect the country from invading crusaders in the 1500s and 1600s. At one time or another, many of Europe’s great civilizations ruled here including the Romans, Greeks and much later the French and the British. It is this diverse background that has woven itself into modern Malta, manifesting itself in everything from architecture and design to food and religion.

Stroll through the walled city of Mdina where the narrow stone laneways converge in a magnificent maze filled with incredible stone fortresses. Often referred to as the “Silent City”, Mdina is one of the most historically significant cities in the world. History calls out no matter where you are and all one has to do is venture down the city streets, take in the view of a picturesque harbor or hike the hilly countryside to recognize that Malta is one special place.
