Australian Capital Territory
The nation's capital deserves attention in its own right. This is the political heart of the country – the old and new Parliament Houses make for fascinating exploring. While in the Australian Capital Territory, consider touring the Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia and Black Mountain Tower.
There's more to the ACT than Canberra though. You may not realize there are more than 140 vineyards supporting 33 wineries within a half-hour drive of the capital. Reislings, chardonnays, pinot noirs and shiraz are all made here. While you're exploring the countryside, pay homage to Sir Donald Bradman at the Bradman Museum in Bowral, or head into the alpine national parks in the Snowy Mountains and enjoy Man from Snowy River country.
Alternatively, take the Princes Highway through historic towns on the way to the unspoiled coastline at Batemans Bay. Slightly further north at Jervis Bay, the dolphins might come out to play while you kayak through the local marine reserve.
